Julia Carey is a fourth grade teacher at Avenues: The World School in Chelsea with over ten years of experience in education. For the past three years at Avenues, Julia has designed and implemented inquiry-based, integrative units of study in core content areas such as literacy, math, and world studies. Prior to her work at Avenues, Julia taught second grade for five years at Shanghai American School in Shanghai, China.

While in Shanghai, Julia became a certified Positive Discipline Classroom Educator and Parent Educator. This work became her grounding philosophy and guides her approach to education and parent coaching, in which she prioritizes establishing respectful partnerships with both students and families. Julia became a certified yoga teacher in 2015 and incorporates mindful awareness practices in all of her teaching and coaching. She also leads workshops in social-emotional learning and well-being practices for educators and parents.

Julia holds a Master of Arts in Teaching and dual bachelors degrees in English and Education from The College of New Jersey. She is a certified elementary educator as well as a teacher of the Deaf/hard of hearing. A self described human Venn diagram, Julia’s wide range of interests makes her a dynamic educator who enjoys individualizing experiences for students that are engaging, challenging, and build confidence.
