5th - 12th Grade

Since moving to New York City in 2012, Ari Livne has worked with students in nearly all middle and high school subjects. Whether his students are struggling in a class or in need of significant improvement on a standardized test, Ari carefully tailors his approach to their specific needs and goals. Although helping students boost their performance is the top priority, Ari is also fiercely committed to cultivating academic independence through deliberate attention to organizational skills, study habits, and mindfulness techniques. He has worked with students at many of New York’s most prestigious schools such as Fieldston, Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, Collegiate,
Dalton, Brearley, Chapin, Poly Prep, and UNIS.

A cum laude graduate of Yale University, Ari spent his college years as a tutor for Yale’s Science and Quantitative Reasoning Center, helping his peers succeed in courses such as Differential Equations, Physics, Biology, Biochemistry, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. He then shifted his focus to middle and high school subjects, and spent the ensuing years guiding students through the majority of the K-12 math and science curriculum as well as many standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, SSAT, ISEE, SHSAT, AP and SAT Biology, SAT Math 1 & 2, AP Calculus AB and BC, AP and SAT Chemistry. In addition to private tutoring, he has also taught SAT prep classes and developed his own curricula for homeschooled students in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Biology.

Ari is also an accomplished classical pianist. He received a master’s degree from Juilliard and is currently working towards a doctorate in music at CUNY Graduate Center. He has recently begun teaching music theory at Hunter College as a part of his doctoral fellowship. Ari brings this broad perspective to his tutoring, particularly in the realm of skill development and problem solving. One of Ari’s strengths as a tutor is diagnosing the core habits or misunderstandings that are limiting a student’s performance, and finding or producing the precise resources, explanations, and exercises that that student requires.

Book you are reading now:
I recently started reading Dostoevsky’s The Idiot because The Brothers Karamazov is one of my
favorite books and it has been several years since I read any Russian novels. I have always
been drawn to Dostoevsky’s fearless exploration of the dark sides of human nature.

"Our son is homeschooled and worked with Ari for Algebra II/Trig as a high school sophomore. Ari is an excellent teacher, built a great rapport with our son, and was able to adjust the lessons based on the needs of the situation. As the sole instructor for math, Ari was proactive, organized and supportive. He helped our son gain a great foundation from which to continue building his math skills."

"It is quite difficult to find someone who both cares for their students and maintains a great quality of education, yet Mr. Ari Livne is a tutor who is able to do both. Throughout our six years working with Ari, he was an amazing help in tutoring math and science, and was very effective at explaining concepts and difficulties that my children faced in school. However, what we appreciated even more was the mentor and role model that he became for our children as an accomplished yet kind teacher. Overall, Ari is a great individual whose talents and genuineness make him an excellent tutor."
