Justin Torok is a computational biologist, tutor, and mentor. As a medical researcher at the
University of California, San Francisco, he explored how Alzheimer’s disease progresses in the
brain using tools from mathematics and computer science, and has extensively published in the
field. He obtained his PhD in Computational Biology from Weill Cornell Medicine in 2021; he
also holds a M.S. in Nanoscale Engineering from the University at Albany and a B.S. in Biology
from Cornell University.

Justin has extensive experience in teaching, both inside and outside of the classroom. He has
served as a teaching assistant in biochemistry, organic chemistry, and immunology, and has
tutored students in mathematics, biology, and chemistry at both the high school and collegiate
levels. As a leader in his lab, he has also supervised undergraduate and graduate students,
teaching them the ins and outs of how to perform publication-worthy scientific research and
guiding them to further hone their critical thinking skills.

Endlessly fascinated by the world around him, Justin’s love of teaching is underpinned by his
lifelong love of learning. He has experienced firsthand that curiosity breeds investigation,
leading to further questions and inquiries in a positive, self-reinforcing cycle. Fostering interest
and building confidence within his students are of as much importance to him as helping them
gain mastery over subject matter. As the learning process is unique to each individual, he readily
adapts his approach to meet his students where they are.

In his off time, Justin is an avid reader and enjoys a number of creative pursuits, including cello,
piano, and writing fiction.
